In a proud moment for Cambridge’s culinary scene, Little Petra, a family-run Jordanian restaurant, has been named “Most Authentic Jordanian Restaurant” at the prestigious M&A Today 2025 Awards. This honor recognizes Little Petra’s dedication to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of Jordanian cuisine and culture, offering guests an experience that goes far beyond food.

A Journey Rooted in Family and Tradition

Founded in April 2019 by Yaseen Hlelat and family, Little Petra began its journey in a small location on Mill Road, Cambridge. From the outset, their mission was clear — to bring wholesome, traditional Jordanian meals to the local community, lovingly prepared using recipes handed down through generations.

After building a loyal following and weathering challenges like the pandemic lockdowns, Little Petra expanded in February 2023, moving to a larger venue on Hills Road. This new space not only allowed them to broaden their menu but also to host private events, bringing even more people together to share in the richness of Jordanian hospitality.

A Celebration of Jordan’s Culinary and Cultural Heritage

What sets Little Petra apart — and earned them this prestigious award — is their commitment to authenticity. Every dish is a taste of Jordan, made with fresh, high-quality ingredients and traditional spices that transport diners straight to the Middle East.

Signature dishes include:

  • A rich selection of mezze, from creamy hummus and baba ghanoush, to crisp falafel and tabbouleh,
  • Traditional main dishes such as Jordanian Mousaka, grilled King Prawns in traditional spices, Fatteh and Bamia,
  • Traditional sweets like baklava and knafeh for a perfect finish.

But Little Petra is more than a restaurant — it’s a cultural space. Visitors are greeted by stunning murals painted by a local artist, depicting iconic scenes of Petra, including the Treasury, the Monastery, ancient caves, and Bedouin life. The interiors reflect the beauty and warmth of Wadi Musa, the hometown of founder Yaseen Hlelat, located at the entrance to Petra itself — one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Bringing Petra to Cambridge

Named after the famed Rose City of Petra, Little Petra not only serves food but tells a story. The restaurant’s name is inspired by the smaller archaeological site near Petra, and its founders aim to bring the spirit of Jordanian hospitality to every table.

Yaseen’s deep personal connection to Petra, combined with photographs taken by his wife of Jordan’s beautiful countryside, adds a deeply personal touch to the restaurant’s ambiance. Guests are not just dining out — they are experiencing a piece of Jordan, right in the heart of Cambridge.

An Award-Winning Commitment to Community and Authenticity

The M&A Today 2025 Award recognizes Little Petra’s impact on the community, not only through their food but also their resilience and growth. Despite the challenges faced by small businesses, especially in the hospitality sector, Little Petra has emerged stronger, fueled by the support of loyal customers and a vision to keep Jordanian culture alive abroad.

“Our customers have been at the heart of everything we do — from our early days on Mill Road to our larger home on Hills Road. This award is a tribute to them and to our commitment to serving authentic Jordanian food made with love and care,”

— Yaseen Hlelat, founder of Little Petra.

Looking Ahead — Continuing to Share Jordanian Culture

With this international recognition, Little Petra is excited to continue growing, introducing more people to the rich flavors and traditions of Jordan. They remain committed to preserving the authenticity of their cuisine while welcoming everyone into a warm, family-centered dining experience.
